of different massage/bodywork modalities.
Where
Will My Massage/Bodywork Session Take Place?
Your
massage/bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet
room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lay on a
table especially designed for your comfort.
Who Will Perform
My Massage/Bodywork Treatment?
In New Mexico we have some of the best-trained professional therapists
in the country. They use a variety of modalities, which are listed on
this website. In New Mexico most bodywork practitioners are licensed
by the state. Certain modalities do not require state licensure. No
two massage or bodywork sessions are exactly alike and you may request
a certain technique or modality from your therapist. If you prefer a
male or female therapist, please say so when you make your appointment.
Must I Be Completely
Undressed During a Treatment?
No. Many massage and bodywork techniques can be performed with the client
partially or fully clothed. You will be properly and professionally
draped during the session. Some techniques/modalities require nothing
more than removing your shoes. Regardless of the treatment modality,
all therapists can adjust their treatment based on the amount of clothing
you prefer to wear during the treatment.
Will the Practitioner
Be Present If I Disrobe?
No. Remember, not all treatment modalities require the client to undress
to receive the maximum benefit of the treatment. If you and the therapist
agree that disrobing would be beneficial for the treatment, the therapist
will leave the room until you are on the table and covered with a clean
sheet or towel.
Will I Be Covered/Draped
During the Session?
Yes. You will be properly and professionally draped at all times to
keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be
uncovered.
Where on my Body
Will I Receive Massage/Bodywork?
You and your
therapist will discuss the goal of your treatment and what parts of
your body will require massage/bodywork. For example, a full body massage
will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck,
and shoulders. Treatments may be more general or specific depending
upon the modalities the therapist uses.
Will Oil or Lotion
Be Used During the Treatment?
Some treatment modalities require oil or lotion and some do not. A light
oil or lotion hydrates your skin and allows your muscles to be worked
on without causing excessive friction.
What Will the
Massage/Bodywork Treatment Feel Like?
Each modality is different. For example, in Swedish massage, your session
may start with broad, flowing strokes, which will help to calm your
nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. Other modalities may
be light in pressure or specific in the pressure applied. Energy based
modalities, like Cranio Sacral, Reiki and Polarity may use very subtle
pressure. Remember to discuss your needs with the therapist before and
during the treatment.
What Do I Do
During a Massage/Bodywork Session?
Make yourself comfortable. The therapist may gently move you and inform
you about what is needed during the treatment. Many people close their
eyes and relax. Others like to talk during their session. Feel free
to ask your therapist questions during your treatment.
How Will I Feel
After My Treatment?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience relief from long-term
aches and pains. Some people experience increased energy, awareness,
and productivity after a treatment. Others may feel tired. Drinking
water after a treatment will help flush waste products from your system
that may have been released into the bloodstream during the session.
Are There Any
Medical Conditions That Would Make Receiving a Massage/Bodywork Treatment
Inadvisable?
Yes. It's important that before you begin your session, you discuss
your general health with your therapist. Inform your therapist of any
health problems or medications you are taking. If you are currently
under a doctor's care for a medical condition, please discuss whether
massage/bodywork is contraindicated.
